FIVE FUN THINGS  FROM NATURE

Today's 5 tips come from Maja Britton, a member of the MRCC and part of their Marketing Committee.  Maja is also a Board Member at NJBG, and owner of Adastra West LLC.

We’re all getting cabin fever right about now, but there is all kinds of entertainment within a safe distance right outside your door. Here are Maja's five tips for finding enjoyment during the COVID-19 quarantine.

5 Fun Things from Nature
  • Enjoy spring!
Spring is here - a few weeks early this year - with bright flowers blooming and the trees beginning to leaf out everywhere. Enjoy it. Open a window, sit on your porch, take a neighborhood walk. Turn off the news for a while and focus on the natural beauty around you. You'll feel better.
  • Grow a victory garden
A little garden can be fun, satisfying, educational - and tasty. You can plant lettuce, carrot, radish and pea seeds now, or get starter plants for strawberries, herbs, tomatoes and many other veggies. When you do go out to your grocery or hardware store, you can also pick up pots and soil if you need them.
  • Meet your (animal) neighbors.
Birds and bees, squirrels and chipmunks are not effected by the virus and are all going about their business as usual. And they're fun to watch. The Cornell Ornithology Lab, considered a leading authority, has a wonderful website to help you figure out who's flying by, and to learn more about them.

  • Look up!
The night sky holds many wonders, and offers a great perspective. Watch the Moon as it changes and moves from day to day. Reddish Mars and yellow Saturn are visible and bright right now. The International Space Station flies over our area regularly; it looks like an airplane that does not blink. To catch a flyover, give NASA's ISS website your zip code and email address and they'll tell you exactly when and where to look.

  • Weed, prune and play
Escape cabin fever by tackling a backyard project or playing a game with your youngsters. You can prune forsythias and other spring shrubs shortly after blooming, or go after emerging weeds for a sense of accomplishment. Games like bocce, horseshoes, paper airplanes and mini races can burn off excess energy and lighten your mood. Don't have the equipment you need? Invent a game with what you have on hand!

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY PARTNER

Picture
WE’RE STILL HERE, caring for hundreds of men, women, and children who depend on Eva’s Village each day for meals, safe shelter, addiction treatment, and recovery support. We’ve had to make important changes to protect the health and safety of our 300+ kitchen guests, 250 shelter and halfway house clients, and our staff. Our clients have never needed us more.

There are many ways you can help:

  • A gift of any size will help to defray the additional expenses for food and packaging for meals to go, for safety and telehealth equipment.
  • Donate items from our Amazon wish list to meet ongoing needs of our shelter and halfway house clients - from socks to toiletries. Please choose Eva's Village when you shop with Amazon Smile.

Your donation will have an impact bigger than you know.

FIVE TIPS FOR KEEPING IT REAL - COMMUNITY & CONNECTION FOR RIDING THE WAVE OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

My name is Jill Cruz of BodyWise FoodSmart. I am a Board Certified Nutrition Specialist and a member of MRCC.

Now, more than ever, it is important to take care of your health. These are very trying, stressful, and chaotic times but taking care of your body should be a priority.

The healthier you are, the better equipped you are to deal with the stress and be productive in your business.

Here are 5 tips for doing just that:

  1. Guard your sleep as your life depends on it. Sleep is the foundation of all health. Aim for 7-8 hours minimum
  2. Protect your thoughts. Use breathing, meditation, prayer, laughter, or whatever you can to guide your thoughts away from the doom and gloom.
  3. Get outside. More than ever, getting outside at least once or twice every day, hopefully for 30 minutes or more, will help you feel a whole lot better
  4. Move more. Try to be as physically active as you can. We, humans, are meant to move.
  5. Eat for health. Focus on whole foods, eating a variety of veggies, and avoiding sugar and refined carbs (white carbs) as much as you can. Try not to stress about eating "perfectly" right now. Just do the best you can.

This is exactly the time when self-care and putting your health above all else will pay off the most!
